The Priceless Intangible Heirloom
“Education is a possession which cannot be taken away from men.”
–Epictetus
In my elementary days, during one of our regular family dinners at home, the subject about dowry, heirloom, and treasure were brought up. Being on the average strata, I know I will not be receiving a bank book with a six-digit figure balance. Nevertheless, I just had to ask my parents what they are planning to bequeath to me and my other three siblings. My dad chuckled. With laughing but tender eyes, he said, “My dear daughter, we are giving you the best treasure in the entire world. It is something that cannot be taken away from you; something that is not tangible, but is very valuable and will be useful for the rest of your life – education.” Being then only a kid, though I did somewhat understand what he meant, I was a bit disappointed. As every typical kid, I was expecting that there will at least be a reasonable stash of money for me. Looking back at that scene, I feel a huge lump in my throat. My dad was right. Education IS the best gift any parent could offer to his/her offspring. As Baz Luhrman’s Sunscreen goes, “Dont expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out.” With my current job, I’m considering getting a second degree course in the field of Computer Network Operations. Since I’m quite busy, I decided to search for a school online. So far, one of the schools I’m checking out is this: http://www.gibbsnj.edu/. If there’s anyone who can give a feedback about it, or would like to suggest other exceptional schools, please free to add a comment. Thanks!
