Occupational Hazard for Seamen
Yesterday I had a chance to chat with one of my old friend from senior high. He is currently working as a seaman, specifically an engine technician for an oil barge. It’s rare that I chat with him because he is always busy with his work. Anyway I have learned that seamen (sea farers) really earn a lot of money compared to us regular employees. He bragged about his new house and about some of his gadgets. He also told me about the many ports he had already visited.
As we continued chatting, I found out that his work was not that easy. He was concerned about his health. Many of his co-workers have developed certain illnesses that he thinks was caused by asbestos poisoning. He said that pipes are lined with a material made with asbestos which is highly toxic to the human body. I think the term he used was Mesothelioma, a type of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Because of what he said, I became worried about him and I advised him to just find another job. After all, what can you do with your money when you’re already dead?
